CIRCUS

Circus from citrusink on Vimeo.

APPRAISING ANIMATION

Question 1: The film I have selected to analyse is is Matreyek's "Circus".

Questions 2: In this film in particular, there are many different objects and shapes used, so this analysis will basically break down what was seen in each scene. In scene one which is the title (0min-1:04min) Matreyek has used a technique where she has drawn a shape eg. a person and then the person's feet extends into another shape eg. a lion. The whole first scene is in black and white and uses the above effect to draw most things you see in a circus-lion, clown, elephants, fire...using all these objects together it gives you the impression of a circus. The second scene (1:04min-1:41min) is the master of ceremony. At the start it is a black background with a white title, which is effective as the title stands out. The rest of the scene is also in black and white with a man or women (not sure) wearing a hat. The third scene (1:41min-2min) a dance number, is interesting because it shows the same girl in a house dancing, but she varies in sizes, there is a very small one on a chair and a large one nearly touching the ceiling. The fourth scene (2min-2:57min) elaphantos is done in a very large library, and has a woman holding a device in one hand and moving it up and down, then a girl/elephant comes in she looks like a girl but has a trunk and elephant ears! The fifth scene (2:57min-3:27min) a thumb princess shows a girl walking almost out of a small cave in a rain forest, there are lots of plants and tress surrounding her. Scene 6 (3:27min-4min)the final scene uses the same technique as above, and the same person i kneeling on top of themselves doing the same action. The people are all in a small room surrounded by lots of chairs, and at the top of the room is a giant eye blinking every now and then.

After watching the film my impression of the mood is that it is dark and chaotic. In very scene there is no colour, and it gives me a dark impression. As well as this in every scene there are hundreds of different things happening making the film very chaotic. I think this is what scares people from the film.

In scene 1 when it it just pitch black there are two repetitive sounds and it almost sounds like a rusty old swing swinging back and forth, and a bike wheel spinning. The rest of the scene is just a accordian playing. The next scene is a combination of a high pitched singer and the accordian. In this scene the man or woman's hat and mustache has been pasted in after being filmed as if you look closely they look like they are floating. The third scene is a song made by an instrument I'm not sure of but it fits in with the scene because all the people are dancing to the beat. The fourth scene with the elephant uses a trombone as well as elephant sounds. Also in this scene it looks like the person was filmed then the elephant ears and trunk were drawn on. For the thumb princess the sounds used are a triangle which is tapped every now and then. The last scene also uses the sound from scene 3 as the scenes are basically in the same place but different actions are used.

Question 4: After watching the film many times and analyzing it, I still have the same reaction every time. I think because i have seen nothing like it, the whole idea of the film scares me. The fact that there is no dialogue and colour is the main thing, as I am not used to it. I am still not sure of the meaning, which I find annoying, I can normally identify meaning of short films quite easily. Like in this film I can tell how the girl was never full part of his puzzle and now she is just somebody that he used to know (brief overview) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY.

After surveying my dad and mother , their overall impression is the same as mine. They have no doubt that the film maker is talented and uses many visual techniques, but the whole idea an concept confuses them. They also can sort of relate the idea of the film to real life, like how all the different people are really odd and how they remind him of a circus. My brother also watched the first minute of the film, but his reaction is unladylike to write on my blog.

From watching the film I think the intended audience are a very selected group. Although I have not found this group yet, but I am sure they are out in the world somewhere. This is because the film is so artistic and unique and a lot of people would be knew to this type of film unless they have already watched it.

Visual language informs my interpretation, as in every scene I am seeing the same colour black and white but the shapes and objects continually change. As said above the fact that everything is always changes makes the film seem like a circus because it is so chaotic.

To create meaning, Matreyek has used sounds with the animation. "The creation of visual images to represent words is an effective vocabulary building strategy. Of course, some words are easier to visualize than others. Generally this technique works best with words that correspond to "concrete" objects. It does not work very well with words that denote abstract concepts." Meaning when I listen to the first scene closing my eyes, the sounds used remind me of a circus, this shows that Matreyek has effectively used sound to portray meaning.

circus

I now know why no one picked this film..........it's rather difficult to understand.

PLANNING

In today's lesson I went through all the videos and picked which one I was going to analyze. I decided to do CIRCUS as no one else in the class is doing it, and I thought it would be something different to mark.

TERM 4

Today was the first lesson of term 4!!!!! TodAY POWELL DOGY outlined what we are doing for the term. We are actually as I interpreted it, making an iBook and explaining how what each scene meant and what we were thinking. We also went into pages and Mr Powell showed us how we do not worry about custom making size and font to make it look rather pretty. We also learned how to do a title page which shows up on the ibooks store. So in summary we learned how to make an ipad and even send it to ourselves wWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!
